Historical Background

The site is the former location of Hallside Steelworks. In the early 1990s, H.J. Banks & Co. cleared the site for housing development, adding topsoil and millions of earthworms to rejuvenate the land.

The area was planted primarily with willow trees with the intention to harvest biomass every 5 years. Land ownership was transferred to Scottish Enterprise Lanarkshire and is now leased to Greenbelt Group for maintenance.

Development by Residents Association

The area was largely untouched until the Drumsagard Village Residents Association initiated a project in 2009. The Association demolished an old furnace that was a gathering spot for troublemakers.

They recreated paths and reopened the area for walking, jogging, and cycling.

Current Project

The woodland area is undergoing community revitalization to breathe new life into the heritage park. A steering group has been formed and the Drumsagard Trust commissioned:

  • Ecology survey
  • Concept proposal
  • Community consultation

Get Involved

We're seeking community involvement, especially from local schools including Hallside, Park View, St. Charles, and James Aiton Primaries.
